YOGA

What is Yoga?

The word "Yoga" simply means "Union", union with our higher selves, union of our body, mind and spirit. Althought, Yoga originiated in ancient India but it is universal, it is for everyone. Yoga is a science, an art and a philosophy which prescribes a way to live our lives. Regular practice blesses us with a health body and calm mind.

There are many forms of yoga. Hatha Yoga deals with discipline and purification of the physical body. Asana can be translated as steady physical posture. It is one of the first few steps of yoga. Practicing asanas creates awareness within our bodies leading to awareness of our minds. By practicing asana mindfully the body is cleansed and freed from toxins. The body becomes flexible, supple, active and strong with regular practice. Breath is the most critical aspect of yoga because breath and the state of mind & body are deeply connected. If the breath is calm, the mind is calm and the functions at its best. Pranayama can be translated as breath control . It is a way to connect with our very own life force by doing various breathing excercises. Breath is life itself, if there is no breath there is no life. Many modern studies have proved that a calm, focused mind leads to a healthy body as well. Yoga takes care of our entire being, it's a holistic practice.

WhyYoga?

Have you ever felt disconnected with you body? Have you ever felt absolutely out of control of you mind? Next time you feel like that, look at how your breath is in that moment. In our present day, fast paced, busy lives Yoga acts as a elixir for our body, mind and spirit. Many of us suffer from chronic pains and illnesses due to our lifestyles and stress is an underlying cause of most physical dis-eases. Yoga helps us manage our lives better. Regular practice of Asana, Pranamaya and Dhyana (Meditation) can reduce stress levels, balance body weight, optimize blood pressure, balance hormones, improve digestion, open lungs, create an overall sense of wellness and peace.

Our bodies are our vehicles to experience, enjoy and make the best of our lives. If the body is not healthy then the mind is not peaceful that's why it is our duty to take time out for ourselves to nourish our bodies, relax our minds, replenish our energy and free our spirits. I invite you to start your journey towards optimum health, peace and happiness.

As my Yoga Teacher Swami Vishnudevananda says,

"Health is wealth, peace of mind is happiness and Yoga shows the way."
